of
Himalayan Environment & Sustainable Development
formerly known as G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development

Director's Message

Let me begin with extending heartfelt good wishes for the New Year 2015. I feel privileged in directing ahead the legacy of the great son of Himalaya “Bharat Ratna Pt Govind Ballabh Pant” in this New Year. Since its inception, in the birth centenary year of Pt G.B. Pant in 1989 till date, under the tutelage of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), the Institute stands for serving the India Himalayan Region (IHR), with its presence in several states of IHR; Headquarters at Kosi-Katarmal, Almora (Uttarakhand) and four Regional Units located at Srinagar (Garhwal), Mohal-Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), and Pangthang (Sikkim). Recent addition of the Mountain Division as the 5th Unit of the Institute is another strengthening exercise to support this cause for the Himalaya, which is hosted within the Ministry, i.e. MoEF&CC, New Delhi. Carving a special niche for ensuring environmental conservation and sustainable development of the Himalaya, the Institute has made significant strides to be proud of and brought the international recognition. Keeping the vision of sustaining the Himalayan ecosystem as the unique system of global significance, the Institute has taken major steps that includes participation at the trans-boundary levels. More importantly, the eight initiatives of the Institute will be strengthening partnership with multiple stakeholders across IHR and beyond, which, I’m sure, will be fruitful for the present and future generations. I’m heartened to see people from all walks of life or countries coming together to find solutions for front-running environmental problems in the Himalaya through constructive debate and exchange of ideas. We stand committed and look forward with great optimism to reinstate the environmental integrity of majestic Himalaya and ensure quality of life. I thank all of you for your commitment and contributions for sustainable development and conservation of the Himalayan Environment!
