Technological Achievements
Development of sustainable natural resource management models through peoples' participation in selected villages of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (NDBR).
In-depth study of transhumance in the Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts of Uttarakhand.
Capacity building in the field of medicinal plants cultivation through farmers to farmer training programme.
Publications of leaflets and monographs in Hindi for the user groups on various environmental issues.
Science motivation programme emphazing natural resource management for high school students
Students motivation programme in the field of natural resource management. Herbal nurseries at few locations at Garhwal region is under operations to cater the needs of planting materials of the local people. The work carried out in the area of agroecosystem, agrodiversity and on management aspects particularly of NDBR has got wide coverage in the state of environment report of Govt. of Uttarakhand.
Also developed capacity and skill of post-graduate, graduate and school level student in the field of environment and development.
Strategies and action plan for eco-tourism programme for NDBR.
Model demonstration of medicinal plants cultivation and conservation in few buffer zone villages of NDBR, and Ginoti in Uttarkashi through people participation.
Wide coverage of the Unit R & D activities in print media at local/regional/national newspapers.
Development of model demonstrations on rehabilitation of degraded land at 4 locations (covering 12 ha) using agroforestry and restoration ecological approaches. A pilot impact assessment exercise was held recently. Progress in terms of replications has been encouraging.
Identification and promotion of value addition to wild edibles as a source for off-farm income generation to rural populace.
In-depth action and scientific research on NDBR area form the basis for developing priority options for resolving policy-people conflicts on one hand and sustainable management of bioresources on the other. The wide scientific coverage motivate UNESCO (Man & Biosphere Programme), Paris to document the outcome which was brought in the form of film 'Invocations to the Mountain Goddess'.
Capacity building of local people/farmers in the field of medicinal plants cultivation/conservation and natural resource management, while organizing regular farmers to farmer training programme has been very encouraging through which a total of 548 farmers/NGOs/GOs personnels) were trained.
Ecological, social and policy dimensions indicators of agrobiodiversity loss were studied in detail which form the basis for developing priority interventions for conservation and management of the traditional agrobiodiversity of the region.
Successful demonstration of hill specific potential rural technologies at four locations such as Maletha (Tehri Garhwal), Ginoti (Uttarkashi), Suraithota-Tolma (Chamoli) and Banswara (Rudraprayag).
Detailed documentation of indigenous knowledge related agronomic practices and uses of medicinal and aromatic plants, traditional drinks/wild edibles, soil fertility maintenance etc. have been carried out.
Developed a good network with about 90 NGOs and many individuals of the region for extension and dissemination of the Unit R & D activities.
Model development on spring sanctuary through bio-engineering measures.
Developed optimal resource use model for Alaknanda valley using RS/GIS.
Environmental impact of recession of Gangotri and Dokriani Bamak glaciers.
