By analysing the population growth of last few decades the population
scenario of Indian Himalaya can be projected for the 2001, the year next
census operation is due. To derive the trends of population growth, the
decadal variation of 1961-71, 1971-81 and 1981-91 with the population density
values of 1981 and 1991 are taken into consideration. The following table
present the statistically calculated projected decadel growth rate (1991-2001),
population density of 2001 for 64 Himalayan districts. A ‘+’ sign in density
column (projected 2001) indicates that there is a significant deviation
between projected density and projected decadel growth rate.

As the decadel growth rate and density of the sample districts are varying
widely, the projected figure (average) may deviate from the actual value
by 8.97%. The percentage dispersion of 42 districts (about 65.63% of total
sample) lies below the standard deviation of the sample, while remaining
22 districts are highly dispersed. The actual population density or the
decadel growth rate (1991-2001) of these districts will be more than projected
figure. Based on percentage deviation of population density these districts
