INFERENCES

In this section of the monograph statistical analyses were done on selected parameters on the basis of past census data.  These analyses are very much relevant to the demographic transition of the region.  As the region is spreading from Jammu & Kashmir to Mizoram covering 12 states and are exposed to many international boundaries, there exist extensive demongraphic diversity.  Keeping in view of common mountain topography and under developed area, few comprehensive inferences were attempted statistically.  The generalisation of demographic progression may lead to indeterminate outcome due to the non-availability of data for Jummu & Kashmir and Assam hills.  However, the available demographic parameters of almost all the administrative regions were taken as dependent and independent variables' correlation analyses.  Keeping in view of sample size and highly dispersed data, n-2 degrees of freedom were assumed for calculation of standard error (SE).  Due to the acute SE, Y+1SE and Y-1SE were considered as upper and lower confidence levels respectively.  Under these assumptions an attempt was made to analyse three major indicators.

Correlation between female literacy of rural area with population growth in Indian Himalayan region
Correlation between literacy rate and workforce (working population) in Indian Himalayan region; and
Projected the population scenario of Indian Himalayan region for the year 2001, which will be the first census year of the century.
