MANIPUR
Content Index

Manipur, earlier a part of Assam province, had been a Union Territory from 1956. It became a full-fledged state in 1972. The state is bounded by Nagaland in the north, Mizoram in the south, Cachar district of Assam in the west, while in the east it has an international boundary with Myanmar. The State language Manipuri was recognised in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution as a national language in 1992. In recent times, Manipur has been the scene of bitter ethnic conflict. The ethnic animosity between the Kukis and Nagas stems from xenophobic insecurity.
